Moon Princess: Overview
Moon Princess from Swedish developer Play’n GO has been loosely based on the manga animation of the same name. It’s a full-blown anime fest full of pastel tones, and cute little touches. You won’t find Princess Serenity or Sailor Senshi here, but players will be entertained by three doe-eyed, leggy beauties, each with the own special ability. Get ready for plenty of girl power and some surprisingly manic, if confusing at first, gameplay.
Players into the Japanese cartoon scene will be right at home with Moon Princess. Accompanying the simple visuals are meters, collection boxes, and multipliers that make more sense when you’ve seen them in action a few times. On the right-hand side of the screen reside the princesses Love, Star, and Storm cheering players on as they spin. Available from 20 p/c up to $/€100 a pop, the grid itself is made up of a 5x5 grid which fill with 25 symbols on each new spin. Setting the whole extravagance off requires setting stakes available from .
Pop, by the way, is an apt word because when three or more matching symbols appear (horizontally or vertically), they explode and get collected in the box on the left. Remaining symbols drop into the gaps to potentially form new winning combinations. Helping this process, the middle position of a three symbol combination remains on the grid and turns wild to help create repeat winners.
Upping the stakes, even more, is a win multiplier that starts at x1 and increases by +1 with each new drop. It might be hard to convey in words, but epic chain reactions of consecutive wins with ascending multipliers are possible using this clever mechanic. It won’t always play out that way since Moon Princess carries a 10/10 rating for volatility leading to drastic swings in play. The math model’s other critical characteristic is RTP which has a default rating of 96.5%, though some operators may switch to a lower setting so make sure to check before firing up.
Players need to prepare for a shower of glitter when they pop open the paytable. Low pay symbols are a collection of trinkets such as a golden-green charm, a moon star, a heart, and a winged bell. The three high pays are the three princesses who all offer payouts of 10 time the stake for a combination of 5. We mentioned the wild, which can substitute for the pay symbols; it also offers payouts of 50 times the stake for a group of five. If wild symbols end up as the only ones remaining on the grid, they are removed, helping players launch the free spins feature.
Moon Princess: Features
Moon Princess has features aplenty adding to the overall mayhem of the game. On any non-winning spin, the Girl Power feature may trigger at random. There are three, depending
on which princess is standing beside the grid at the time:
- Love transforms one set of symbols into another type of symbol.
- Star adds one or two extra wilds symbols to the grid.
- Storm removes two sets of symbols from the grid.
Keep an eye on the power meter to the left of the screen. When filled, it triggers the Princess Trinity feature. The meter is made up of three sections which are filled like so;
- 3 of a kind fills 1 section
- 4 of a kind fills 2 sections.
- 5 of a kind combos fill 3 sections.
When the meter is filled, and there are no further wins on the grid, one free spin is awarded. This spin allows Love, Star, and Storm’s to trigger their powers one at a time to create more chances at winning.
The main goal of Moon Princess is clearing the whole grid to trigger the main Free Spins feature. When this happens, players choose either Love who awards 4 free spins, Star brings 5, while Storm awards 8 free spins. The chosen princess has her Girl Power active for the duration, and even better, the drop multiplier does not reset between game rounds, though it has a ceiling of x20.
The meter is involved in free spins as described above, but now it also awards more free spins when it is filled. Players get four extra spins for the Love Princess, three for the Star Princess, and two in the Storm Princess feature – up to a maximum of 20. The Princess Trinity feature is not part of free spins, instead, should the grid be cleared then players win an instant 100x their total bet.
Moon Princess: Verdict
A lot is going on here, so Moon Princess needs to be experienced in the flesh to get a true feel for what it’s about. All this talk of princesses, love, and moons might be off-putting for some, but hopefully not, because Moon Princess is a top-notch slot that has been superbly designed.
These types of games are all about getting on a roll, and Moon Princess can certainly roll with the best of them. Combos lead to filled meters, to modifiers, to free spins, and beyond. Chains of winners can pop along seemingly without end, when they are going well. It is highly volatile keep in mind, so not every spin is going to be an epic ride to glory.
When it goes, it can certainly go nuts, although the stated max win potential of 5,000x seems like a bit of exaggeration. More realistic is a max win half of that number. In any case, couple that figure with the high-performance math model and you’ve got a game that overcomes any aversion you might have for the theme. Often when Moon Princess gets going, you have no idea what is happening – even if you’ve fully read the rules. But it doesn’t matter at all. Moon Princess is a riot of activity where it’s best to just sit back and enjoy the anime madness.
Don't Miss
If Moon Princess ticks all the right boxes for you, you'll probably want to check out the Christmas version titled Moon Princess Christmas Kingdom or, alternatively, the Egyptian themed Sisters of the Sun version - both offering wins of up to 15,000 times your stake.
