Christmas in September in the Philippines

Did you know that the Philippines, my home country, celebrates Christmas as early as September? Yes! You heard me right. At the start of the “bbbrrrrr ” months in the Philippines, people start selling Christmas decors. Christmas is very important to Filipinos. Aside from the obvious that the birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated on December, the Christmas season in the Philippines is also a way for families to get together. Normally, those who live abroad or those who are working as OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) come home every December to celebrate the holidays with their loved ones.

So as soon as September starts, Pinoys start preparing their homes for that joyous occasion at the last month of the year.  And you know what? The Christmas season doesn’t end on the 25th. It ends after the Feast of the Three Kings, which is normally on the 1st Sunday of January. That’s when the Christmas season ends in most parts of the Philippines. But in Cebu, the Queen City of the South, Christmas starts from September till the 3rd Sunday of January since Cebuanos celebrate the festive Sinulog. Cebu is the 3rd largest city in the Philippines. Sinulog is one of the biggest festivals in the country. Not that I am biased or anything just because I live in this city but I believe that Sinulog is the grandest of all festivals in the Philippines. 😉

Anyway, now that September is here and it’ll be my mom’s birthday next week, I decided to set up our Christmas tree this early. She decided to have a feast on her birthday to serve as a thanksgiving for her fast recovery after her 4th stroke. Since I have nothing to do, I told her I’d set up our Xmas tree to add life to our boring house. ehehehe.

I just finished setting up our Christmas tree and what’s lacking is the headpiece. We normally have a white and green angel up there but for some reason, my mom doesn’t one to put one on top this year. She insists on having a star for the tree. I guess I’ll be making that trip to the mall to buy one within the weekend if I don’t change her mind later. I’m also planning to add garlands on other areas of the house. At least my work in setting up the tree is done. 😉

I wonder who else among my friends have Christmas decors this early in their houses. hehehe.
