Chip Spin: Slot Overview
One of the many colourful characters in Las Vegas lore, Julius 'Big Julie' Weintraub, famously said, 'The guy who invented poker was bright, but the guy who invented the chip was a genius'. On that note, developer Relax Gaming takes players to the heart of Sin City in Chip Spin to shine a spotlight on the humble casino chip in a game of dual bonus rounds. As well as free spins with multipliers and sticky wilds, players get a hold & win bonus game, not a million miles from Money Train 2, where casino chips take the place of lethal weaponry.
A sunny day has settled over Las Vegas when Chip Spin rolls into town. The High Roller Ferris Wheel rotates lazily in the distance, next to other icons of the strip, such as the Luxor, the Paris Las Vegas Hotel, and the Stratosphere Tower. Plonked in the middle, on the steps of a boutique-style hotel, is Chip Spin's 5x5 game grid. It's cheerfully optimistic in the beginning, thanks in part to a jazzy soundtrack evoking an earlier, jazzier Las Vegas era.
Players can enjoy the Vegas lights on any device, selecting bets from 10 p/c up to $/€100. The RTP comes in three forms, depending on whether you're playing in regular mode or activating one of two bonus buys. The default value is 96.41%, while bought free spins bump the figure up to 96.53%, or 96.74% for the hold-and-win game. Players are looking at a highly volatile trip to Vegas, with a substantial win cap in place should it all go to plan.
Chip Spin uses a connected ways win mechanic (basically cluster pays) where combinations form when at least 3 matching symbols land left to right, either in the same row, one row above, or one row below. Card royals J-A make up the low pays, three gems are the mids, and four characters are the higher value symbols. Each character is associated with a card suit, so the lady is diamonds, a clubs guy, a purple pimp looking guy is hearts, and a bald hard man type chewing a massive cigar represents spades. Values for character symbols range from 4 to 6 times the bet for a line of five of a kind. There are no wild symbols in the base game, but one does appear during free spins.
Chip Spin: Slot Features
There's no feature or modifier to be found during the base game either, so you'll need to trigger or buy your way to better things via free spins or the Chip Spin Bonus Game. Landing 3 or more scatter symbols triggers free spins - 3 scatters get you 8 free spins, while any additional bonus symbol in view adds +2 free spins each to the total. During free spins, 3 new casino chip symbols are added to the reels:
- Green chips award +1 extra spin.
- Purple chips increase the win multiplier by +1.
- Black chips convert into sticky wild symbols.
Next up is the Chip Spin Bonus Game which is triggered when 5 or more casino chips of any variety land in the base game. The round starts with 1 life, and lives are lost when no new chips land. However, some chips land with little hearts on them; these add an extra life. When lives are gone, the round ends, and whatever wins have been built up are paid out.
During the bonus game, 3 types of chips land and are locked into position:
- Green ones award a coin value.
- Purple chips are Snipers, which double the value of 1 to 3 green chips.
- Black is the Collector, collecting the value of all visible coins, except for its own.
Snipers and Collectors appear with a number of mini chips overlaid on them; this indicates how many times their ability may be used. If a column is filled with chips, all green ones on it have their value consolidated into one chip, freeing up room for more to land.
Lastly, both bonus rounds can be bought at the cost of 90x the bet for free spins, or 70x the bet for the Chip Spin Bonus Game game.
Chip Spin: Slot Verdict
Chip Spin ended up being quite an enjoyable homage to the humble casino chip. Well, maybe not the base game so much, since there isn't a whole lot to it. The Vegas theme is a little superficial too. It looks good, yet more focus on the ragtag bunch of gangsters, dames, and oil baron types might have provided more personality. Such was the case with the quirky dinos in Dinopolis, which incidentally shines through at times in Chip Spin, particularly during free spins when the game goes all pinky purple.
Let's not get stuck analysing the subject matter too much, though, because Chip Spin is fully capable of providing exciting action. Its jazzy ambience pulls you along for a ride that can be bumpy a lot of the time, hugely rewarding at others. Like the original Money Train more so than the sequel, Chip Spin pours everything into its bonus games. Handy then Relax has provided the opportunity to buy both of them. Not only are the main thrills found there, but wins as high as 25,000 times the bet are possible too. Free spins provide a lethal cocktail of sticky wilds and win multipliers, while the other bonus can go bananas provided a few snipers come on board. Larger totals than the max win were observed during testing, yet the 25k is a cap that cannot be breached.
There's nothing stopping gamblers from having a great time playing Chip Spin, yet in some ways, it's hard to see where it fits in the Relax Gaming lineup. The hold-and-win is like a watered-down, less chaotic version of Money Train 2, and free spins do all the right things but feel like a secondary add on. Still, it's hard to complain when a game looks good while providing a couple of high performing bonus games which are capable of potentially massive payoffs.
Great
Chip Spin pours it all into two potent bonus rounds, successfully offsetting a base game devoid of features where not a whole lot takes place.
