Out With The Old, In With Another Old

Posted on 18 March 2011 | 2 responses | 772 views

Huh?!?!?

Ever since I got a Torque phone, which I won (consolation prize) from the post I wrote about SM Cyberzone’s Summer Festival Experience, I’ve been using it as a spare phone for my other mobile number and when my sister got a new spanking iPhone 4, I countlessly begged her to donate her BB or her E63 phone but to no avail :-(

And then some time last February, she announced that they’ll be replacing their company provided phones and they can buy back their old phones for just 1k. I was ecstatic! Finally, I’ll own a QWERTY phone. I wasn’t really thrilled with the thought of owning one since I know it would be a pain in the butt to master texting from a QWERTY phone (especially while driving) but nonetheless, I was still thrilled  knowing that I’ll be having a new toy.

Nokia E63 vs Torque
the calculator phone or the qwerty phone? what’s your prefernce?

So after waiting for 2-3 weeks, my sister finally turned over her used Nokia E63. I got a new OLD phone! Yey! Actually, this phone is useless when text messaging and outgoing calls are concerned since this one doesn’t have any load  The only time it does have load (only P5-10 max) in it is when I feel that the sim’s about to expire. Other than that, I use this phone whenever I’m lazy too get out of bed and check my emails from Lenny. One thing’s for sure, I love the E63′s ability to allow me to check my emails via my wireless internet connection. Oh, I love my Nokia N82 too much that I’m not willing to give it up yet as my primary phone despite it’s almost bad shape. hehehe

To my Torque phone, I truly enjoyed using your super cute ala calculator shape. But I know you are in good hands with Dookie. To my new OLD Nokia E63 phone, hello there! Looking forward to more fruitful years with you ;-)

So, out with the Old and in with another old, weeeeeeeeeeeee!

Simple Steps to Import a Backup Copy of Blog Files on a Self-Hosted WordPress Site

Posted on 14 March 2011 | 2 responses | 2,945 views

Disclaimer: I’m not a techie person and I didn’t take this course in college :-P  This post was prompted due to the forgetfulness of a friend

So I’m deviating from my usual posts and will turn techie on this instance to give you a quick fix on how to import a backup copy of your website files on your self-hosted WordPress site in case you move to a different hosting provider or when something goes wrong with your website.

Before I proceed, let me tell you that it is VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY important to add a plug-in called WordPress Database Backup by Austin Matzko to your WordPress site in order to schedule a backup of your files on your preferred time. You can choose from an hourly, daily, weekly and monthly backups if you want. If this plugin doesn’t work on your site, you probably need to either change your theme, look for another plugin that works or sing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” joke! Honestly, I dunno. Maybe you can try and remove all your plugins and themes and install them one by one to determine who the culprit is.

Your back up file will be sent to your email and you need to secure them or else risk loosing those years of blogging.

Also remember that normally, web hosting providers DO NOT secure a backup copy of your website. They only do this in random and it is your responsibility to back up your files (unless of course you are paying your hosting provider crazy money to backup your files for you).

And when something happens to your website, or you decide to transfer them to a different hosting provider, here are simple steps to follow when importing a copy of your backup files on your website.

***Before anything else, be sure you have a fresh install of WordPress on the domain name you are working on. If you are transferring to a different hosting provider or simply doing a clean install, be sure to install the WordPress Database Backup by Austin Matzko and send a test backup on your email which you will use to determine the name of your database as mentioned on Step #2.

Now, you are ready to begin the transfer/import.

Look for your Back Up email and download the file to your computer

(the files that you’ll be transferring, ok?)

database backup email
a backup file email looks something like this

Go to your cPanel and find the phpMyAdmin button

database buttons in cPanel

Follow the simple steps on the next image

how to import backups to phpMyAdmin
click the image to enlarge

1) Find phpMyAdmin in cPanel

2) Be sure you install the backup file on the correct database

In this example, the back up filename is undersv1_wrd17_wp_20110313_780.sql.gz. You need to look for undersv1_wrd17 since this is the name of your database and select this database on the phpMyAdmin screen. Other hosting providers may have other ways of naming their databases.

3) Click the Import Tab

4) Click the “Choose File” button and find the email file you downloaded in your computer which was mentioned above

Be sure that you select the right format of the file being imported. Select .SQL if the extension filename is sql.gz. Select .XML if the extension filename has .xml

5) Click the “Go” button on the lower right side and wait for the import to be complete

6) When the import is successful, you will see a message on top that the “Import has been successfully finished…”

Alright! That’s It. After this, you’re all set! Go to your WordPress site and check it out!

Wait, something went wrong? You see a blank space staring back at you in your site? Try changing your theme and check your site again. If all’s good, revert back to the original theme you are using. If that won’t still work or if the import in phpMyAdmin wasn’t a success, then I would suggest you contact your hosting provider’s tech support to help you identify the issue. This could be related to a compatibility issue of your old hosting provider’s database and the new one. I’ve experienced that when I transferred this site to Bluehost last year. I was paying for a cheap hosting provider ($1/month and I got my money’s worth. pft!) prior to that and had issues with the transfer since their Database version is older than what BlueHost was using. I’m just glad that the tech support folks from BlueHost immediately helped me out with my problem when I contacted them to seek assistance. Now, I also had issues transferring my other sites and the issues were different and the tech support at Bluehost was still able to help me out. I also made sure I asked them what the problem was and how to fix it so that I can fix them on my own when I encounter more issues since I have quite a few sites to transfer over to Bluehost.

Anyway, the simple steps to import a backup copy of blog files on a self-hosted WordPress site which I just discussed are tried and tested steps that I continue following whenever I need to do an import/transfer and those simple steps never failed to give me the results I needed. So goodluck with your import and happy blogging! :-)

Did I forget something else here? Do let me know, ok?  :-D

Air Bread a.k.a. Pan de Sal at Pan de Manila

Warning: Some scenes may be offending so I would like to apologize for my behavior.

It is said that it is a bad thing to make fun of food. However, I couldn’t help myself from doing the inevitable. After checking out the lighthouse in Liloan, Cebu, we decided to hang out for a couple more hours and our last stop was at the Pan de Manila branch in Asiatown, IT Park. We ordered coffee and pan de sal (bread rolls). At Php 3.00 per piece, I ordered 5 pieces when I saw how yummy it looked.

When I got the first bread out of the paper bag, I immediately noticed how light it was. After my first bite, I couldn’t help squeeze the bread until it formed into a small ball. I thought it was better flattening or squeezing whatever air’s inside the bread.

Pan de Manila sells pan de sal in small and large sizes at Php 3.00 and Php 6.00 respectively. I wonder if there’s a difference in the bread’s consistency if I choose to buy the larger size.

Hanging out at Yogu

One ordinary night, my friend pinged me and said “doi mangaon ta ug yogurt nah” (doi, let’s eat yogurt). She was thinking of going to Yogu when I asked her where. I just woke up at that time. After further discussion, we agreed to eat at McDonalds Jones branch instead. But since I also wanted to try out the yogurt place before Crossroads in Banilad, I told her we should go there after consuming our meal in McDo.

Yogu, Banilad
closing time

I’ve always wanted to check out this Yogu place since their small store is located beside a gasoline station and I think it’s cool to have this cute pink stall sitting in the middle of this busy street.

chandelier and lanterns

I didn’t like the variety of toppings they had. There were too many dried toppings and there were lesser fruits. I even tried ordering strawberry toppings (i think since it was red) and when they opened the lid, there were bubbles in it and the staff immediately told me that it was already spoiled. It took time for me to select my toppings after that. I end up settling for mango, blueberry and chocolate tidbits.

My friend also wanted to order the create-a-crepe one but when she learned that only a few toppings will be added, she hesitated. One thing that stopped her from ordering one too was when I pointed to her that big circle where they bake the crepe. On top of that thin baking circle thingy was a bowl tin can filled with food. I’m not sure if it was their dinner or if it was food for the cat/dog since it looked more of a lamaw (mixed leftover food) to me. Or perhaps it was just rice with green vegetable soup in it. That one was definitely a turn off. I just hope that they removed that thing when they saw we were coming in the store. tsk tsk tsk.

As for the Yogu, it was ok. I wasn’t satisfied with their serving of toppings. When ordering, your only choice is a regular cup or a large cup. I didn’t notice the size of a regular cup since I just followed what my friend ordered. I had a hard time finishing the yogurt and my friend mentioned that the bad thing about their sizes is that they don’t have a medium so you’ll really be stuck at ordering just a small size or the large one.

another photo of the lantern

My experience dining at Yogu wasn’t that superb but I’m not complaining too. I just had to mention a few things that I observed from the store. What made our yogurt treat fun was the assortment of stories my friend and I exchanged. I got busy taking photos of their lantern too. I simply adore them! I wish I could take them home with me. LOL.

I Wena was so talkative  that we failed to realize it was already 12 mn. The staff was standing in front of us and that’s when we realized that we were too busy chitchatting that we already forgot about the time. They close at 12 midnight. So upon learning this, we hurriedly stepped out of where we were seated so they could clean our table and close the store. Hmmm…I guess they really close at 12mn sharp, with or without customers.

We only noticed that they have free wifi before we left the place. darn!

Yogu is located along Gov. M. Cuenco Avenue, Banilad, in between the Shell Gasoline station and The Sentinel condo on your way to Country Mall after crossing the flyover from Ayala.

Learning to Play the Piano Through Online Videos

Posted on 5 February 2011 | No responses | 592 views

It has been a while since my last blog entry since I got too busy with stuff which hindered me from creating blog posts for this site. Yeah, excuses! I know

Anyway, now, I’m taking a break from being on hiatus with this site to show to you what I’m trying to accomplish now since this is the only time I feel I’m not busy.

I’ve long wanted to learn how to play the piano yet I never got the time to do so. My schedule’s crazy so in rare opportunities like today, I’m taking a break from everything and googled on “how to play the piano” where I stumbled upon this video in YouTube.

what’s on Lenny while seated beside my keyboard

It has 40 free lessons in it and I’m on my 3rd (where I decided I should blog and document this  ). I was in my room when I watched the 1st lesson and thought it’d be more beneficial if I sit beside our keyboard while I watch the videos to apply what I have learned so far.

side by side

I just hope I can finish the 40 Lessons and learn from them (since I’m getting sleepy already.LOL)  Otherwise, I may have to shed a few bucks to hire a live piano teacher :D
