Bangui Windmills

Posted on 16 February 2009 | 791 views

The Bangui Windmills is the #1 reason why I went to Ilocos last December, so together with my brother and sister, we had our own extreme north adventure to the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

The windmills of Bangui are located in Bangui, Ilocos Norte. These huge turbines are officially referred to as the North Wind Bangui Bay Project.

Led by the NorthWind Development Corporation, this was created as a means to practice the use of renewable energy sources and to help reduce the greenhouse gases that cause global warming. This is the first “Wind Farm” in the country and it consisted of wind turbines constructed on-shore facing the South China Sea and is considered to be the biggest in Southeast Asia.

As per wikipilipinas.org, these 15 giant fans supplies 40% electricity to the Ilocos Region. However, we were told that it now only supplies 15% electricity to the province. Some of the windmills were not powered when we visited the place.
